Volleyball Court Information
Official Court Dimensions
The standard volleyball court dimensions for international and USA competition are 59 feet (18 meters) in length and 29.5 feet (9 meters) in width. The court is divided into two equal sides by a centerline underneath a net.
Free Zone Requirements
The free zone is the area surrounding the court where players can retrieve balls and make plays. For international competitions, the free zone should extend at least 6.56 feet (2 meters) from the boundary lines on all sides, with higher-level competitions requiring 9.84 feet (3 meters) from the sidelines and 19.69 feet (6 meters) from the end lines.
Net Height
The standard net height is:
- Men’s competition: 7’11⅝” (2.43 meters)
- Women’s competition: 7’4⅛” (2.24 meters)
- Co-ed play: Usually 7’11⅝” or 7’8″ (2.35 meters)
- Junior play: Varies by age group
Surface Considerations
The playing surface should be flat, horizontal, and uniform. Indoor courts typically use hardwood flooring with specific systems designed to absorb impact and provide proper ball response. Beach volleyball requires a sand surface of specific depth and grain size.
Ceiling Height
For competitive play, the ceiling height should be at least 23 feet (7 meters) from the playing surface. Higher ceilings are preferred for higher-level competitions, with international competitions usually requiring at least 39.4 feet (12 meters) of clearance.
Court Markings
All lines on the court are 2 inches (5 cm) wide. The center line divides the court into two equal courts and extends beneath the net from sideline to sideline. The attack line is drawn 9’10” (3 meters) from the center line and defines the front zone.
Frequently Asked Questions
For a standard volleyball court with proper free zones, you’ll need approximately 3,000-4,000 square feet. This includes the playing area (1,740.5 sq ft) plus adequate free zone space around all sides. For international competitions, even more space is required to accommodate larger free zones.
Beach volleyball courts are smaller than indoor courts, measuring 52.5 x 26.25 feet (16 x 8 meters). The surface is sand instead of a hard surface, and beach volleyball is typically played with two players per team rather than six. The net height is also slightly lower for beach volleyball.
The cost varies widely depending on the type of court and materials used. A basic outdoor grass court might cost as little as $1,000-$2,000 for net equipment and line marking. Sand courts can range from $5,000-$15,000 depending on sand quality and depth. Indoor courts with proper flooring systems can cost $50,000-$100,000 or more, depending on the quality of the system and additional amenities.
Maple hardwood flooring with a proper subfloor system is considered the gold standard for volleyball courts. These systems provide the right combination of shock absorption, ball response, and player safety. Synthetic surfaces like polyurethane or vinyl are also common alternatives that can be more cost-effective while still providing good performance characteristics.
Yes, recreational volleyball courts can be smaller than regulation size. For casual play, you could build a court as small as 30 x 20 feet. Another option is to follow junior volleyball court dimensions, which are 49.2 x 26.2 feet. The smaller size makes it easier to fit in limited spaces while still providing an enjoyable playing experience for recreational players.
