Court Surface Types
Concrete
- Durable and long-lasting (20+ years with proper maintenance)
- Low maintenance requirements
- Higher upfront cost but excellent longevity
- Harder on players’ joints
- Typical cost: $5-$7 per square foot
Asphalt
- More affordable than concrete
- Lifespan of 15-20 years
- Quicker installation time
- May crack in extreme temperatures
- Typical cost: $3-$5 per square foot
Synthetic (Acrylic)
- Applied over concrete or asphalt base
- Better shock absorption than bare concrete/asphalt
- Customizable colors and markings
- Lifespan of 7-10 years before resurfacing
- Typical cost: $2-$4 per square foot (over existing base)
Hardwood
- Professional quality surface (NBA standard)
- Excellent ball bounce and player comfort
- Highest cost option and typically for indoor use only
- Requires climate control and regular maintenance
- Typical cost: $9-$12+ per square foot
Rubber Tiles
- Excellent shock absorption and safety
- Easy installation and repair
- Good for multi-purpose courts
- Typical lifespan of 10-15 years
- Typical cost: $7-$10 per square foot
Important Considerations
- Orientation: North-South orientation is preferred to avoid sun glare during play
- Drainage: Court should have a slight slope (1%) for water runoff
- Run-off Area: Safety buffer zone of 3-10 feet around the court is recommended
- Accessibility: Consider ADA requirements for public courts
- Lighting: For evening use, plan for adequate lighting (typically 30-50 foot-candles)
- Fencing: Consider 10-foot fencing behind backboards to contain balls
Maintenance Requirements
Regular maintenance extends the life of your court and ensures safe play:
- Concrete/Asphalt: Clean debris regularly, fill cracks promptly, reseal every 4-5 years
- Acrylic Surfaces: Clean quarterly, resurface every 7-10 years
- Wood: Daily dust mopping, recoat annually, sand and refinish every 7-10 years
- Line Markings: Touch up as needed, typically every 2-3 years
