Methods to Measure Foot Arch Height
Method 1: The Wet Test
- Wet the bottom of your foot with water
- Step onto a piece of cardboard or dark paper, applying normal pressure
- Step off and examine the shape of your footprint

Arch Types Reference
Low Arch (Flat Foot)
Height: Less than 1.5 cm (0.59 inches)
Characteristics: Most or all of your foot appears in the footprint with minimal curve. Prone to overpronation.
Normal Arch
Height: 1.5 – 2.5 cm (0.59 – 0.98 inches)
Characteristics: About half of your arch is visible with a natural curve. Provides balanced support and weight distribution.
High Arch
Height: Greater than 2.5 cm (0.98 inches)
Characteristics: Only the heel and ball appear in the footprint, with a deep arch curve. Prone to underpronation.
Tips for Different Arch Types
For Low Arches (Flat Feet)
- Look for motion-control or stability shoes with firm midsoles
- Choose shoes with straight lasts (shape) that help control overpronation
- Consider orthotic inserts with good arch support
- Avoid completely flat shoes with no support
- Exercises: Toe curls, arch lifts, and calf stretches can help strengthen arch muscles
For Normal Arches
- Neutral cushioned shoes work well for most activities
- Look for shoes with moderate arch support
- Semi-curved lasts fit most normal arches
- Replace shoes regularly to maintain proper support

For High Arches
- Look for cushioned shoes with flexible midsoles
- Choose shoes with curved lasts to accommodate the arch shape
