About Hiking Trail Distance Calculations

Accurate distance calculation is essential for planning hiking trips, estimating completion times, and ensuring you’re adequately prepared with supplies. Our hiking trail distance planner uses the Haversine formula to calculate the distance between GPS coordinates, taking into account the curvature of the Earth.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Add waypoints to your trail using one of the three input methods (GPS coordinates, location name/address, or by clicking on the map).
  2. Review your waypoints in the list – you can remove any waypoint if needed.
  3. Click “Calculate Distance” to see the total trail distance in feet or miles.
  4. The elevation profile will show the ups and downs of your trail.
  5. Save your trail for future reference or export it as a GPX file to use with GPS devices.

Understanding Elevation Impact

The elevation profile is important for hikers as it shows the difficulty of the trail. Steeper sections require more energy and time to navigate. Our calculator takes elevation changes into account when estimating hiking time, adding approximately 30 minutes for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain.

Tips for Accurate Trail Planning

  • Add waypoints at each significant turn or junction in the trail.
  • Include waypoints at notable landmarks or rest areas.
  • For long straight sections, fewer waypoints are needed.
  • For winding trails, add more waypoints to capture the true path.
