Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should mulch be applied?

For most applications, a depth of 2-4 inches is recommended. Too thin won’t provide adequate weed control and moisture retention, while too thick can prevent water from reaching plant roots and may cause rot at the base of plants and trees.

How often should I replace mulch?

Organic mulches typically need to be refreshed or replaced every 1-2 years as they decompose. Inorganic mulches like rubber or stone last much longer but may need occasional cleaning or replenishment.

Should I remove old mulch before adding new mulch?

If the old mulch is still in good condition and hasn’t decomposed significantly, you can add a thin layer (1-2 inches) of new mulch on top of the old. If the old mulch is breaking down, matted, or showing signs of fungal growth, it’s best to remove it before applying new mulch.

What unit is mulch sold in?

Mulch is typically sold in cubic yards for bulk purchases or in bags measured in cubic feet (usually 1.5 to 3 cubic feet per bag). Our calculator provides results in both units to make purchasing easier.

Should mulch touch plant stems or tree trunks?

No, mulch should be kept 2-3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot, disease, and insect problems. Create a shallow donut or ring around plants rather than mounding mulch against them.

Tips for Successful Mulching

Preparation

  • Remove weeds and grass from the area before applying mulch
  • Level the soil surface and break up any clumps
  • Consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide if weed control is a priority
  • Edge garden beds to keep mulch contained

Application

  • Apply mulch evenly across the area
  • Keep mulch 2-3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks
  • Avoid piling mulch against buildings or wooden structures
  • Order 5-10% extra to account for variations in depth and settling
