Slope Length in Feet Calculator

Calculate accurate slope measurements for construction, landscaping, and civil engineering projects

Calculate Slope Length

This calculator helps you determine the length of a slope using two different methods. You can calculate by entering the run and rise, or by entering the horizontal distance and angle of inclination.

Run & Rise Distance & Angle

Understanding Slope Length Calculation

Method 1: Using Run and Rise

For this method, we use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the slope length as the hypotenuse of a right triangle formed by the run (horizontal distance) and rise (vertical distance).

Slope Length (L) = √(run² + rise²)

This method is commonly used in construction when you know the horizontal span and vertical height difference.

Method 2: Using Distance and Angle

For this method, we use trigonometry to calculate the slope length based on the horizontal distance and angle of inclination.

Slope Length (L) = horizontal distance / cos(angle)

This method is useful when you know the angle of the slope and the horizontal distance it covers.

Slope Measurement Conversions

Slopes can be expressed in different ways. Here’s how they relate:

Slope FormatDescriptionExampleConversion
Slope RatioExpressed as rise:run1:4 (1 foot rise for every 4 feet of run)Converting from rise and run directly
Slope PercentageThe rise divided by run, multiplied by 10025% (1:4 slope)Percentage = (Rise ÷ Run) × 100
Slope AngleThe angle of inclination in degrees14° (approximately a 1:4 slope)Angle = tan⁻¹(Rise ÷ Run)

Practical Applications

Construction

Used for roof pitch calculations, ramp design, staircase construction, and determining material quantities for sloped surfaces. Building codes often specify maximum slopes for different structures.

Landscaping

Essential for designing drainage systems, terraced gardens, retaining walls, and walkways. Proper slope calculation helps prevent erosion and ensures water flows away from buildings.

Civil Engineering

Critical for road design, railway construction, pipeline installations, and grading plans. Engineers use slope calculations to determine cut and fill requirements for construction projects.

Regulations and Standards

Different structures have different slope requirements according to building codes and accessibility standards:

ApplicationMaximum SlopeNotes
ADA Ramps1:12 (8.33%)For wheelchair accessibility in public buildings
Residential Driveways1:8 (12.5%)Varies by local codes
Walkways1:20 (5%)For comfortable pedestrian use
Roads1:12 to 1:7 (8-14%)Depends on road classification and location
Residential RoofsVaries (4:12 to 9:12 common)Depends on climate, style, and materials
